
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (and Dry)
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got steam everywhere and water splashing around. In a spot like that, a basic heating element isn’t just a bad choice—it’s a risk. If you want total peace of mind, you can’t just trust the bulb. You have to make sure the whole setup is IP65 rated.
Why moisture is the enemy
Here’s the thing: water loves to find a path between the live heating element and the metal frame. That’s a recipe for disaster. To stop that, we use sealed quartz envelopes and specific gaskets on the end-caps. That IP65 rating is basically your insurance policy. It keeps dust out of the terminals and stops water from spraying right into the electrical junctions. We also use high-temp silicone seals where the wires connect. It keeps the moisture from creeping in. Because if those seals fail? You’re looking at a ground fault.
The gear that actually works
I usually go with shortwave infrared quartz tubes for these jobs. Quartz is great because it can handle the shock of turning on and off quickly without just cracking. And since humidity loves to eat metal, we use gold or nickel-plated contacts. It stops corrosion from chewing through your connections over time. One thing to watch out for is voltage drop. Most systems are 230V, but the heat density changes depending on the wattage. If you’re using high-wattage lamps, they put out a ton of heat. You’ll need to make sure the housing is vented properly, otherwise, that trapped heat will actually melt or degrade your IP65 seals.
The real-world trade-offs
First off, always wire these into a dedicated GFCI. Even with the best seals in the world, you want a hardware failsafe. Just in case. But there is a catch. When you seal a housing to keep water out, you’re also trapping heat inside. You’re basically trading airflow for protection. This means the lamp might run a bit hotter than one sitting in an open room. Just make sure your housing materials can take the heat. If they can’t, the seals will warp, they’ll start to leak, and you’re right back where you started.
