Outdoor infrared heaters have a rough life. You’ve got these high-wattage elements fighting against rain, salt air, and those wild temperature swings that happen overnight. Most people think the heating element is what gives out first. But honestly? It’s usually the lead-wire seal.
The problem with “cheap” seals
If you look at those budget garden heaters, the spot where the wire hits the quartz tube is usually just slapped together with some basic silicone or cheap glue. That’s a recipe for disaster. These things get incredibly hot. Over time, that heat basically cooks the sealant until it cracks. Once you’ve got a crack, moisture finds its way in. It starts “tracking”—basically creating a path for electricity to go where it shouldn’t. The insulation burns, the unit shorts out, and suddenly your heater is a paperweight before the first winter is even over.
Doing it the right way
We do things differently. Instead of just gluing a wire and hoping for the best, we use a multi-stage process. We’re talking high-temp ceramic potting or glass-to-metal seals. It creates a tight, airtight barrier that keeps oxygen and moisture far away from the live terminals. And we don’t use standard PVC wiring because, well, PVC melts. We use fluoropolymers. They can take the heat without getting brittle, which means the wires won’t snap or crack as the unit expands and contracts every time you flip the switch.
A quick tip on installation
There is one trade-off with a seal this tight: it’s rigid. Because it’s so solid, you can’t just bend the lead wires at a sharp angle during install. If you kink the wire too close to the seal, you might actually crack the quartz tube. Just give the wire a bit of room to breathe—a gentle curve—and you’re golden. When the sealing is done right, you stop worrying about random shorts. The heater just works, and it lasts until the element naturally reaches the end of its life, rather than dying early because of a leaky bit of glue.
