Getting Heat Right in Gyms and Spas
If you’ve ever stepped into a gym changing room or a spa after a cold shower, you know that feeling. That sudden, shivering chill. It’s a nightmare to fix. Usually, you’d just throw in a heater, but standard ones just warm up the air. In a room full of steam and open vents, that warm air just floats away. You’re basically paying to heat the ceiling. That’s why we use shortwave infrared. Instead of fighting the air, it goes straight for the person.
Why “IP44” actually matters
You’ll see the term IP44 on the spec sheet. In plain English? It means the unit won’t freak out when things get steamy. Water and high-voltage electricity don’t get along. Without a proper rating, moisture gets into the terminals, things start to rust, and eventually, you get a short circuit. We use heavy-duty gaskets and sealed wiring to keep the guts of the machine bone-dry. It’s the difference between a heater that lasts years and one that pops a breaker the first time someone takes a hot shower.
The “Instant” Factor
The cool thing about infrared is that it doesn’t wait around. There’s no heating element that needs to “warm up” the room. The second you flip the switch, the energy hits your skin and turns into heat. It’s immediate. We use quartz glass tubes to beam that heat straight down, so you aren’t wasting power on the walls or the rafters. You just feel warm. Period.
The tricky part: Installation
Now, you can’t just plug these into a power strip and call it a day. They pull a lot of current the moment they kick on, so they need their own dedicated circuit. There’s also a bit of a balancing act with where you hang them. Shortwave heat doesn’t travel forever. If you mount the unit too high, the warmth disappears before it reaches the floor. But if you put them too low or crank the wattage too high in a tiny room, you’ll end up baking whoever is standing directly underneath. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between the height of the ceiling and the power of the lamp. Get that right, and nobody’s shivering anymore.
