Ever stepped into a bathroom on a freezing morning and wished for instant heat? That’s where infrared lamps come in. They’re great because they warm you up immediately, but there’s a catch. If you’ve ever looked at a halogen bulb, you know they can be blinding. When we’re designing these for homes—especially for families with babies or people with sensitive eyes—we have to figure out how to keep the heat high without turning the bathroom into a tanning salon. Dealing with the glare Standard halogen tubes are basically light bombs. To fix that, we tweak the spectral distribution. We do this by adding specific materials to the quartz glass or messing with the filament temperature to kill off those harsh blue light peaks. The result? A soft, gentle glow. It’s not just to make the room look cozy. It’s about protecting your eyes from strain while making sure the heat still sinks deep into your skin to actually get you warm. The nitty-gritty stuff We use high-purity quartz for the tubes. Why? Because these things heat up and cool down fast, and cheap glass would just crack. We usually pair them with R7s snap-in connectors so you can swap a dead bulb out in seconds without a headache. Then there are the reflectors. We use polished aluminum or gold plating to shove all that heat straight down. It sounds simple, but the angles have to be perfect. If the reflector is off by just a few degrees, you’re wasting about 15% of your heat. That’s a lot of wasted energy. The honest trade-off Here’s the thing: you can’t have a totally dark lamp that still puts out massive heat in a small space. It’s a balancing act. To get that eye-safe glow, we sometimes have to settle for a slightly lower wattage than what you’d find in a giant industrial dryer. Plus, if we go too heavy on the filters to protect your eyes, the lamp takes a bit longer to warm up. It’s all about finding that sweet spot where the light is easy on the eyes, but the room still feels toasty the moment you flip the switch.
