
Stop Letting Your Heating Lamps Scrap Your Wafers
If you’re running a Class 100 cleanroom, you already know the nightmare. One tiny speck of dust—something you can’t even see—and your entire batch of wafers is trash. It’s frustrating. The problem is that standard IR lamps are often the culprit. They outgas or shed microscopic particles from their envelopes, basically acting like little dust factories right where you can least afford it. We fixed this by switching to high-purity fused quartz for our heating elements.
Why the quartz actually matters
Most glass has metallic impurities. We use synthetic fused quartz because it strips all that junk out. It does more than just take the heat. It stops that annoying “shedding” you see with cheaper tubes. We process the surface so it stays chemically inert. That means when the lamp hits its peak temperature, nothing leaches out into your environment. It just stays clean.
Getting the heat exactly right
Precision is everything here. You need a perfect balance between wattage and surface area. We’ve tuned these lamps to hit a concentrated short-wave IR spectrum. The energy punches through the wafer surface quickly, but it doesn’t bake the fixtures around it. You get a fast ramp-up and a thermal profile that stays steady across the whole substrate. It’s consistent. That’s the goal.
A word of caution: Handle with care
Here is the catch. High-purity quartz is a beast chemically, but it’s a bit of a diva physically. It can’t take the same mechanical abuse as toughened glass. If your mounting brackets are clamped too tight or your vibration dampening is off, you’re looking at a hairline fracture. Just make sure your housing gives the lamp plenty of room to breathe and expand as it heats up.
Fitting it into your workflow
We made these units as “drop-in” as possible. Nobody wants a long shutdown for maintenance. The footprint is small and the connections are secure, which means you aren’t accidentally dragging contaminants into the system while you’re swapping parts. One last tip: make sure your vacuum or inert gas purging is in sync with the lamp’s heat. If they aren’t talking to each other, you might end up with residue buildup on the quartz, and that defeats the whole purpose.
