
How to Pick the Right Wattage for Your Ceiling Heater
Here is the thing about recessed infrared heaters: they don’t bother warming up the air. Instead, they beam heat directly onto you. It’s that cozy, sun-on-your-skin feeling, which is exactly what you want when you step out of a steaming shower into a chilly bathroom. But you can’t just grab any unit and hope for the best. You have to match the power to the room.
Finding Your Sweet Spot
If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room—something under 4m²—stick with a 400W or 600W unit. It’s plenty. Any more than that and you’ll basically be sitting in a sauna, and the heater will keep clicking on and off, which eventually kills the hardware. For those mid-sized bathrooms (around 4m² to 8m²), 800W or 1000W is usually the way to go. Then you have the big master baths. If you’re over 10m², a single lamp won’t cut it. You’ll end up with “cold spots” where you’re shivering in one corner and roasting in another. In those cases, it’s better to install a couple of units or go for a high-output 1200W+ setup.
Where to Put Them
Placement is everything. Since these sit flush in the ceiling, the heat comes down in a cone. Put them exactly where you actually stand. Right over the vanity or just outside the shower door. The cool part? Short-wave infrared cuts right through steam and moisture. It doesn’t get “blocked” by the humidity like old-school heaters do. Just a heads-up: higher wattage means the lamp gets hotter. Make sure there’s plenty of breathing room in the ceiling housing so you don’t accidentally scorch your drywall.
The Power Trade-off
High-wattage lamps are fast. Like, “instant warmth” fast. But there’s a catch. They pull a lot of juice. If you’re wiring up three or four of these in one zone, double-check your breaker. If your wiring isn’t beefy enough for the total amperage, you’re going to be tripping your circuit breaker every time you want to feel warm. Not a great way to start your morning.
